Epoxy-coated Concrete Floors are
Making Luxury Homes Beautiful and Easy to Maintain
Minneapolis, MN - April 19, 2005 - Modern home designs are using creative
applications of epoxy and urethanes to replace expensive, high-maintenance and
fragile floor surfaces like wood, marble, and slate. Coated concrete floors are
protecting owners of large homes from the damage caused to these standard
flooring materials by water, chemicals, dyes, and mechanical forces. Now
everyone can have great looking floors that are not subject to mold, mildew,
warping, or dissolving—and are easy to maintain.
The benefits of these new flooring materials are on display within a new "bag
style" beach house on Lake Mallalue, overlooking the St. Croix River Valley in
Hudson, Wisconsin. This 68 x 48, three-story house uses all concrete
construction, including the floors. The pre-stressed concrete floors have two
inches of structural concrete poured over ten zones of in-floor heating per
level. Saw cuts every eight feet give the impression of stone slab floors. The
surface has a marbleized white and sand epoxy finish applied two colors at once
to achieve the marbled effect. The few puffs of gold glitter imbedded in the
epoxy create unexpected highlights to the floor when hit by light. A combination
of gloss catalyst for the white color and flat catalyst for the sand color
leaves the floor with a natural look of quarried stone.
Maintenance on these floors consists of releasing a carpet sweeping robot
twice-a-week to roam the space removing particles and dust. When company is
coming, a push dust mop, like those used at airport terminals, can be run though
the house to put a finishing touch on the dusting of these beautiful floors.
Once-a-month, a quick string mopping removes any dirt brought in. These floors
can be cleaned to hospital standards in minutes, look great, remove problems
with dust mites, mold, mildew, and bacteria—while costing a fraction of other
floors employing carpeting, wood, or even linoleum.
Chemically resistant, these seamless floors are made of epoxy and urethane —
finishes that flow on and, by changing their chemistry, become resistant to dirt
and stains. Flow-coated surfaces are impervious to water and are often used
inside liquid storage tanks, swimming pools, and feed troughs. Unlike tile,
these surfaces have no grout to clean and are not glued down with latex- or
petroleum-based adhesives. Flow-coated surfaces are great adhesives in
themselves, sticking to the flooring surface without chipping, peeling, or
lifting. With good preparation, flow-coated surfaces are applied permanently,
refinished easily, and require little or no maintenance. Great new looks are
also available. Floors can be made to simulate other surfaces such as granite,
tile, and slate. Logos, stripes, and sparkly yellow brick roads are now
appearing in restaurants, "collector car" garages, basements, as well as
high-end homes.
