Finally, A Method for Repairing and Rendering Invisible Hairline Cracks in Concrete Floors

Minneapolis, MN – March 2, 2005 – Durall Industrial Flooring announces the availability of its factory-direct kit of concrete resurfacing materials including a glazing compound for repairing those nuisance hairline cracks that plague even the most carefully poured floors.

Professional builders report that up to 90% of their floors have some hairline cracking. It used to be that when hairline cracks appeared in a new concrete floor you either had to live with the problem or break up the floor and pour it again. Even with a second pour, there was still no assurance that cracks would not appear again.

Durall Industrial Flooring provides free quotes at www.concrete-floor-coatings.com for customized kits of materials that include procedures for installing industrial quality epoxy and urethane floor coatings. When hairline cracks are part of the problem to be resolved, Durall’s kits include a glazing compound that is applied between coats of its Dura Seal 400 epoxy floor seal. After the floor has been properly prepared using the supplied step-by-step instructions, an initial coat of epoxy floor seal is applied. Because this first coat of Dura Seal 400 produces a shiny, uniformly colored floor, hairline cracks can be spotted easily.

Once the floor seal has hardened enough to walk on (about 6 hours), the glazing compound can be applied to fill the hairline cracks. The glazing compound comes in a 4 oz. tube and needs no mixing. Squeezed directly from the toothpaste-style tube into the hairline crack, the excess is removed with a plastic or metal putty knife. The glazing compound hardens in about 20 minutes, after which, the floor can be lightly sanded with a 60-grit sanding screen using a rotary scrubber (like a school janitor would use.) Once sanded, the floor is swept or vacuumed to remove the particles screened off the floor. Then a second coat of Dura Seal 400 is applied, rendering most hairline cracks unobservable.

America is moving away from bare concrete and wood surfaces toward lower-cost, lower maintenance, and healthier floor finishes. Biohazards, mildew, dust mites, spoors, and other contaminants are a serious concern to industry and homeowners alike. Many are discovering that these hazards, along with hairline cracks, can be eliminated from floors by switching to low cost, high wear, flow-coated flooring systems. In this new millennium, warehouses, food processors, manufacturing facilities, even garages, and basements are being sealed with hard surfaces using industry-proven materials and techniques adopted in the past decade.

Chemically resistant, these seamless floors are made of epoxy and urethane — finishes that flow on and then, by changing their chemistry, become resistant to dirt and stains. Flow-coated surfaces are impervious to water and are often used inside liquid storage tanks, swimming pools, and feed troughs. Unlike tile, these surfaces have no grout to clean and are not glued down with latex- or petroleum-based adhesives. Flow-coated surfaces are great adhesives in themselves. With good preparation, flow-coated surfaces are applied permanently, refinished easily, and require little or no maintenance.

Great new looks are also available. Floors can be made to simulate other surfaces such as granite, tile, slate, and others. And logos, stripes, and sparkly yellow brick roads are now appearing in restaurants, "collector cars" garages, basements and even food processing plants. These beautifully sealed and easy to maintain floors come in over 20 colors. The floor finish can be gloss, flat, or satin and may be easily accented with decorative chips. Additionally, the floors may be skid-resistant like emery paper, yet still easy to sweep or squeegee. The secret to creating such striking floor designs is applying an attractive yet highly chemical- and wear-resistant surface that make floors easy to maintain while enhancing their beauty.
